Hero Events hired me to help them
put together the print media for a holiday party they were
coordinating for Juniper Networks. Tight time and money constraints
required innovative solutions to the many items they needed
for the event, including a die-cut CD case which held a CD
of holiday music and which doubled as the invitation. Other
items I designed for the event included various inserts for
the CD case, posters for the Juniper Networks offices, and
signage for the night of the party (including gobo signage).
The party's theme was Wish upon
a Star so we ran with the celestial theme. With no
budget whatsoever for images, I used the star-shaped characters
from Zapf Dingbats and outlined them for a retro-looking holdiay
look which I applied across everything. In order to optimize
on printing, I ganged all the printed matter (drink tickets,
RSVP card, and hotel information on the same sheet as the
CD case.
When choosing colors, Juniper Networks
wanted to stay away from the traditional red and green out
of respect to people who celebrate Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. I
settled on Juniper's official PMS blue since it's already
a color known to everyone in the company, and, when screened
back it becomes a lovely wintery blue. Instead of a harsh
black for the text color, I chose a rich, dark brown. I chose
to print on a gloss white cover stock and utilized a matte
varnish on top so that some of the stars would glimmer in
the areas where the varnish did not print. Not only did the
matte varnish add a nice feel to the piece, the play of matte
and shine really gave the invites a sparkle that really spelled
"party."
